The very specific character and uniqueness of the site must be preserved by retaining its most essential experiential elements even after construction. The unique character of the Radio Austria Grounds is created by the site’s location, the experience of a large meadow, the overview of key green spaces and urban areas of Vienna, and the unobstructed view to the east and unobstructed sunshine from the south. This connects this meadow to the large green space to the east and south, rather than to the western and northern single-family residential area – a single-family residential development that completely disregards the topography and urban situation.
All access is from Filmteichgasse. This highest point is kept clear of development to maintain an overview of the site and to create the experience of green space and distant views (here, particularly of the Central Cemetery) upon entry. At the entrance, there is a spacious, covered (green) car and bicycle parking space. In addition, each building is directly accessible by car. There is also access from the north (via the existing residential area) exclusively for emergency vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists. On the one hand, the apartments are directly integrated into the meadow (on the ground floor), while on the other hand, the upper floor always offers a generous view of the larger green space. This spectacular view – as if through a telescope, directed eastward over the entire residential area – is complemented by a view to the south, towards the sun. This long side also allows the sun’s rays to penetrate the building – for passive solar energy use. The shared meadow serves as a community for the residents (direct access for everyone, a play area, jogging, walking, picking flowers, the smell of mowing and drying, etc.). The flat, covered area above the parking spaces at the entrance to the property serves as a shared “platform”: here there is space for barbecues, children’s play equipment, etc. (with a good overview (perception) of the entire meadow and a full view of the entire surrounding area). Depending on their different location on the meadow, the different building types are characterized by a different relationship to the surroundings (especially the meadow and the distant view).
